Twila Belva Hurst-Phillips, 100, of Brookline, Missouri, formerly of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was born June 29, 1922, in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of Charles C. and Lillie (Nighswonger) Spurgeon. She departed this life, Saturday, September 10, 2022, at her home in Brookline.
Twila was a 1940 Centerville High School graduate.
On September 13, 1941, she was united in marriage to Garnett W. Hurst; he preceded her in death on January 2, 1979. On March 20, 1983, she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Phillips; he preceded her in death on March 14, 2006.
Twila was first employed as a telephone exchange operator in Pleasant Hill. Later she and Garnett owned and operated the Hurst-Courtney Grocery store in downtown Pleasant Hill. She finished her career as Head Cashier at the Dillon’s grocery store. She was a former member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and was a current member of the Battlefield United Methodist Church in Springfield. She was a member of Ivy Leaf Chapter #415 and Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118, both of Pleasant Hill. She enjoyed sewing and was a gifted seamstress; she also enjoyed playing cards (especially Skip-Bo) and fishing. She truly loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Twila was also preceded in death by her son, Ronald Hurst on February 7, 2013; two brothers, Ben Spurgeon and Maynard Spurgeon; and one sister, Winona McCord.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Kimbrell of Brookline; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 16, 2022, at the funeral home. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Nicholas Boston, Sean Durkin, Eric Farmer, Jeff Kimbrell, Cody Reece, and Joe Shepherd.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Battlefield United Methodist Church or Cox At Home Hospice and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
