William Steven Haight, 72, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was born Friday, February 22, 1952, in Brookfield, Missouri. He departed this life Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at his home surrounded by his wife and five children.

On June 7, 1986, he was united in marriage to Sandra Marlene Schade in Ashland, Missouri.

Steve was a 1970 Brookfield High School graduate. Following graduation he started his career in home construction. Later, after earning his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri at Columbia, he began his teaching career. He served in the New Bloomfield, Columbia, Centerville, Piedmont, and Pleasant Hill School districts, retiring in 2015. He also coached basketball at several schools. He was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Lee’s Summit and the International Folk Alliance. He enjoyed fishing, canoeing, and cooking. He was an accomplished guitarist and singer/songwriter, playing for 40 years in a 50s-60s band called Hot Rod and the Cooltones, and a more recent rock band called Slaten Forge.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sandra of Pleasant Hill; five children, Justin J. (and Abigail) Bonard of Sanger, Texas, Jarrett C. (and Jodi) Bonard of San Antonio, Texas, Kathleen R. (and Nicholas) Nowak of Charleston, South Carolina, Mary H. (and John) Brandenburg of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Gillian F. (and Kelsie) Haight of Rockford, Illinois; ten grandchildren, Judah Bonard, Elijah Bonard, Jaylin Bonard, Jessa Bonard, Samuel Nowak, Quinn Nowak, Eliza Nowak, Helen Brandenburg, John Jr. Brandenburg, and Alice Brandenburg; two sisters, Donna Tollerton of Kearney, Missouri, and Dana (and Norris) Melton of Chillicothe, Missouri; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Erma F. (Blew) and Jerome F. Flynn.

A memorial visitation was held Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Anne’s Episcopal Church or the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
