Robert William “Bobby” Neill, 79, lifelong resident of Pleasant Hill, was born February 9, 1944, in Pleasant Hill, the son of Harold R. and Edna B. (Funston) Neill, Sr. He departed this life Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Lee’s Summit Medical Center.
Bobby attended Pleasant Hill Schools. Due to health issues at birth his parents were warned that he wouldn’t live past the age of twelve; he overcame these issues and lived a long life. He was employed for many years as a Cafeteria worker and dishwasher for the Government Services Agency at the Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City. He later worked for the B&M Café in downtown Pleasant Hill. He was of the Baptist faith.
Unbeknownst to many he was a gifted gardener as he had a knack for growing flowers and trees. He also loved caring for animals. In grade school he took in various animals including a monkey whom he cared for and a sick duckling that he found and nursed back to health. He enjoyed listening to music and if you had a radio that didn’t work, he could fix it. He also loved buying and playing scratch-off lotto tickets. He overcame many challenges in life and never let those challenges slow him down.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Neill, Jr.; a sister-in-law, Punkie Neill; and one niece, Sheila Pemberton.
He is survived by two brothers, Donnie Neill and Jerry Neill, both of Pleasant Hill; sister-in-law, Sharon Neill of Pleasant Hill; five nieces and nephews, Russell (and Kim) Neill of Port St. Lucie, Florida, Jamie (and Mandy) Neill of Holden; Stephanie (and Rick Pryor) of Pleasant Hill; Angela Neill of Lee’s Summit; and Jerry (and April) Neill of Pleasant Hill; several great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Graveside funeral services were held Friday, December 22, 2023, at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Reverend Jim Vest officiated. Casket bearers were Jake Mitchell, Jamie Neill, Josh Neill, Morgan Pemberton, Phillip Pemberton and Rick Pryor.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pleasant Hill Animal Shelter and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
