Lillie Mae Roberts, 95, of Pleasant Hill, was born October 1, 1928, in Elizabeth, Arkansas, the daughter of Jasper and Clara (Zimmer) Haynes. She departed this life Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at the Kansas City Hospice House.
Growing up helping her parents on the family farm near Elizabeth, she also was instrumental in raising her eight brothers and sisters.
On September 26, 1945, she was united in marriage to Hershel H. Roberts at the county courthouse in Salem, Arkansas. To this union three children, Caroline, Connie, and Terry, were born. Hershel preceded Mae in death on January 19, 2002.
Mae was a homemaker and a gifted seamstress but also worked several jobs over the years to help support her family. She worked alongside Hershel at the Fulton County Forestry Commission in Arkansas and at the local bait shop selling minnows. In 1958, after moving to Baldwin Park, Missouri, near Pleasant Hill, she worked as a waitress for the Green Horn restaurant earning sixty cents an hour. She also worked as a bartender for the Town Tavern and Garrett’s, both in downtown Pleasant Hill. After their retirement in 1980 she and Hershel moved to Pottersville, Missouri, where they resided until they moved to a farm near Austin Township, Missouri in 1986. While on the farm she raised a bountiful garden and loved canning fruits and vegetables. They also raised chickens, gurneys, rabbits, and cattle. She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, baking, and cooking. She especially enjoyed time spent showing her grandson how to bake, cook, and dance. She also loved dancing while Hershel played Bass for the Cross County Country Band.
Mae was always active in the communities she lived in. Most recently she was a member of the Archie Senior Citizens and served as a poll worker in Austin Township. She also thoroughly enjoyed entertaining her friends on their birthdays and anniversaries.
Mae was a loving mother and grandmother who was devoted to her husband, children, and grandchildren. Her passing will leave a void in the hearts of all who knew her.
Mae was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Connie Roberts; one grandson, Darrell Noble; one granddaughter, Teresa Kim Noble; five brothers, Max Otho Haynes, William Haynes, Adron Haynes, Ray Haynes, and Gorman Haynes; and one sister, Mary Chapman.
She is survived by her daughter, Caroline Lefler of East Lynne; her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Mary Roberts of Pleasant Hill; three grandchildren, Timothy (and Margie) Noble of Kansas City, Evonne Noble of Kansas City, and Sam Roberts of Holton, Kansas; six great grandchildren, Jacob (and Jennie) Noble, Robin (and Tim) Paxton, Rebecca Noble, Kathryn Larson, Amanda (and Ryan) Hinchliff, and Megan (and Jacob) Carathers; many great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Skiba of West Plains, Missouri, and Betty Kellum of Mountain Home, Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
