Blue Springs, Formerly of Lone Jack

Jerome Robert “J.R.” Bowers, 91, of Blue Springs, formerly of Lone Jack, was born November 17, 1933, in Lone Jack, the son of Joe J. and Dorothy P. (Costigan) Bowers. He departed this life Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the Parkway Senior Living Community in Blue Springs.

J.R. was a Lone Jack High School graduate. He was a United States Navy Veteran.

On February 25, 1955, he was united in marriage to Delma Lorene Snow. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2018.

J.R. was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Jackson County Highway department for over 40 years from 1955 until February 1996. He also owned and operated J.R. Bowers Trenching. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, going to sales, collecting old tools, and time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

J.R. was also preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Janette Dalke, Joann Hite, and Judy Dornes.

He is survived by his children, Jaylene (and Bill) Grady of Pleasant Hill and Robert Bowers of Independence; three grandchildren, Gina (and Brian) Monroe of Blue Springs, Codie Bowers of Augusta, Kansas, and Tyler Bowers of Independence; five great grandchildren, Lauren (and Gibson) Meador, Abby Monroe, Jackson Monroe, Lilah Robinson, and Skyler Maynard; one sister, Barbara Early of Lee’s Summit; other relatives and friends.

Graveside funeral services were held Friday, April 11, 2025, at the Lone Jack Cemetery. Pastor Janice Hill officiated. Full military honors were conducted by the United States Navy and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3118 Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Ascend Hospice and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
