Joanne R. Carthy

Joanne Rae Carthy, 93, of Lee's Summit, formerly of Pleasant Hill, was born November 10, 1931, in East St. Louis, Illinois, the daughter of Ray L. and Mae L. (Billen) Graham. She departed this life Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Saint Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit, surrounded by love and family.

Joanne grew up in East St. Louis and was a 1949 East St. Louis High School graduate. 

On June 10, 1951, she was united in marriage to Clinton R. Carthy in East St. Louis and to this union one daughter, Kathleen was born. Clint preceded Joanne in death on September 24, 2008.

Joanne was employed as an Executive Secretary for the Unity Village School of Christianity. Following retirement, she worked as a Secretary for the First Presbyterian Church in Pleasant Hill. She and Clint also owned and operated the Circle C Restaurant in Pleasant Hill in the early 1980’s. While living in St. Louis she was an assistant Girl Scout leader and a member of the Assumption Valley Garden Club. She was a member of the St. Bridget Catholic Church in Pleasant Hill and served on the Altar and Rosary Society. Joanne was also an active member of the Red Hat Society within the community. She enjoyed spending time with friends, birdwatching, and shopping. She especially enjoyed time spent with family.

Joanne was also preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Mae; her adopted father, Phillip J. Schmidt, who adopted her after her father died when she was eight; and her sister, Judy Graham.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Brian Dinges of Pleasant Hill; two granddaughters and their husbands, Dana and Dustin Duncan of Pleasant Hill and Lauren and Nathan Wright of East Lynne; great grandchildren, McKenna Dinges-Summers, Emma Wright, Olivia Knox, Kaesen Knox, Mason Wright, Hartley Duncan, Harvie Wright, Dalyn Duncan, and Riley Duncan; other relatives and friends. 

Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2025, at the St. Bridget Catholic Church, Pleasant Hill. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket bearers are Brian Dinges, Dustin Duncan, Nathan Wright, Kaesen Knox, Rod Graves, and Tim Long.

Memorial contributions are suggested to The Lay Clergy Council of Pleasant Hill or the American Cancer Society and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
