James Richard Daniels, 89, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was born December 21, 1933, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Ward and Irene (Barry) Daniels. He departed this life Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at the AdventHealth South Overland Park Hospital surrounded with love and family.
Jim was a 1952 Kansas City East High School graduate.
Jim was a United States Coast Guard Korean War Era Veteran serving November 1952 to November 1956. In 1974 he enlisted in the Missouri Army National Guard serving 16 years until retiring in October 1990.
On July 5, 1957, he was united in marriage to Shirley J. Howard in Kansas City, Missouri. She preceded him in death on October 22, 2006.
Jim was employed as a painter at the General Motor Leads Plant, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local # 93, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 8220 - Belton, American Legion Post #0488-Belton, and the Pleasant Hill First Christian Church. Early in his his life he enjoyed rebuilding cars. Later he enjoyed playing the coronet and harmonica, working in his yard, and going to the Casino with Shirley. In later years he enjoyed studying and sharing history, watching old westerns and making photo albums for the family.
Jim is survived by his children Cheri (and Roger) Hocker of Kingsville and Joe Daniels of Overland Park; two granddaughters, Mandy Hocker and Christy (and Travis) Minor, both of Pleasant Hill; four great grandchildren, Jordan Lysinger, Aiden Minor, Evan Minor, and Owen Minor; other relatives and friends.
Cremation has been accorded.
A memorial visitation was held Thursday, December 14, 2023, at the funeral home.
Gravesides military services and inurnment was held Friday, December 15, 2023, at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City. Reverend Roger Smith officiated. Full military honors were conducted by the United States Coast Guard and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #3118 Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
