George David Coates, 89, of Raytown, was born, August 7, 1926, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of Louis and Edith (Green) Coates. He departed this life Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the John Knox Village Hospice House, Lee's Summit.
David was a 1944 graduate of St. Gregory's Catholic school in Shawnee, Oklahoma. He was proud to have served his country during WWII in the United States Navy.
On October 9, 1947, he was united in marriage to Irene Murphy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He later married Marie A. (Stafford) Morasch on July 14, 1977.
Most of David's career he was a recruiter and manager of sales people. He then worked for the IRS in Kansas City until his retirement at the age of 85. In his spare time he was an avid football fan. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Raytown.
David was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Sam Coates and L.B. Coates.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Marie of Lee's Summit; three sons, Michael (and Janice) Coates of Luther, Oklahoma, Dan (and Karen) Coates of San Angelo, Texas, and Jeffrey (and Abby) Coates of Flint, Texas; three daughters, Barbara (and Mike) Roberson of Canton, Texas, Kerry Coates, of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Colleen (and Glenn) Girone of Lawton, Oklahoma; two stepsons, Jack (and Diana) Morasch of Lee's Summit, Missouri, and George Morasch, II, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; 23 grandchildren, Michaels children, Michelle, Bonni, Shonolo, Nathan, and Conner; Daniels children, Sarah, Kaela, Joshua, and Jeffrey; Barbara's children, Renee and Robby; Jeffrey's children, Jennifer (deceased), Ryan, Lindsey, Nicolas, Michael, and Blake; Kerry's children, Brittney and Logan; Colleen's Children, Heather, Glenn, Jr., Rachel, and Benjamin; 18 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, April 4, 2016, at the St. Bridget Catholic Church. Monsignor Robert Murphy officiated. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the U.S. Navy and V.F.W. Post #3118 Honor Guard.
