Benny Earl Mayfield, 85, of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was born Tuesday, June 5, 1923 in Rosston, Oklahoma the son of Floyd and Letha (Wilmot) Mayfield. He departed this life Saturday, November 22, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital-East, in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
On October 15, 1949 Ben was united in marriage to Lois Fern Mayfield at the 1st Baptist Church in Drexel, Missouri.
Ben graduated from Adrian High School in 1941. He is a WWII Veteran of the United States Navy where he served in the Pacific Theatre. Following his time in the service he worked for the Gas Service Company where he began as a Meter Reader and worked his way up to Supervisor of Construction. Following his retirement in 1986 he and his wife Fern operated a lawn service in Pleasant Hill. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman, even appearing on the Harold Ensley show in early 1970's. He and Fern attended the Strasburg Baptist Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers Clifford & Elmer Mayfield.
He is survived by his wife Fern of the home; his daughter Connie Mayfield of Huntington Beach, California; three brothers Melvin Mayfield (and Darlene) of Pleasant Hill, Ralph Mayfield (and Christine) of Warsaw, Missouri; and James Mayfield (and Janice) of Lexington, Missouri; three sisters Lucille Brewer of Harrisonville, Missouri; Ines Lipperd (and Leroy) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Doris Berry of Leawood, Kansas; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services were held Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at the Stanley-Dickey Funeral Home. Reverend Jim Wilkins officiated. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery where members of the Honor Guard of VFW Post #3118 presented the flag. Casket bearers were Doug Berry, Richard Mayfield, Roger Mayfield, Terry Mayfield, Darrell Nelson and Rick Nelson. Honorary casket bearers were George Long, Howard Moore, Junior Ross, & Lloyd Ross.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
